Name of Project:
Project Mala Secondary College Scholarships
Project Mala Schools at Guria Secondary School (Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh)
September 2015-September 2018
Description and Impact:
WEF is collaborating with Project Mala to fund the Project Mala Secondary College Scholarships Program at the Guria Secondary School located near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. This scholarship program supports deserving students as they study in reputed learning programs with access to quality international education and access to training in English language skills.
Founded in 1989, Project Mala is an international Charity dedicated to abolishing child labor in the hand-knotted carpet industry of India. The students supported by their program would otherwise have no access to quality education.
Initially, WEF sponsored 12 boys under project Mala. They have completed their 10th grade. All of the Project Mala children in grade 10 secured 1st Division status in the Uttar Pradesh High School Examinations. Mishal Ali who has been supported by WEF since September had the highest mark of any boy at 86%. Five other WEF boys achieved marks of 80% or more. The remaining six WEF boys secured above 70%
Currently, WEF is collaborating with Project Mala to fund the Project Mala Secondary College Scholarships for 8 girls and 6 boys. We are excited to share that the average percentage mark of the students is 77% in primary and secondary level.
WEF aims to bring change in the lives of these children and through them change in their communities. Through education proper health care and diet, these students will be agents of change in their vulnerable and disadvantaged community and eventually break the cycle of multi-generational poverty.
